It is always important to know exactly what is in the food we eat and seek out ingredients that benefit us in the best ways. Many of the foods available in grocery stores and popular fast food items are full of nasty ingredients that do way more harm than good. From corn syrup to sugar, some of the things on this list may surprise you but when it comes to choosing food that's good for you. These ingredients should be avoided at all costs.


High Fructose Corn Syrup

This ingredient is pretty notorious, but it definitely lives up to its reputation. High Fructose Corn Syrup is full of nasty, unneeded calories, bad hormone boosters, and has the ability to cause overeating and unnecessary weight gain.

Food Colorings

Yellow 6, Blue 1 & 2, Red 3, and Green 3 are all artificial food colorings that have been linked to things like brain and kidney cancer. Food dyes can be hard to avoid, especially since they're used in everything from pet food to sausages, but finding foods that only use natural dyes is a great start!

Sodium Benzoate

As if you needed another reason to avoid sodas and artificially flavored juices. This ingredient when used in drinks is combined with ascorbic acid and the two together have been known to cause cancer.

BHA & BHT (Butylated hydroxyanisole & butylated hydroxytoluene)

Typically used as a preservative to keep household foods like cereal, potato chips, and candy from going stale quickly, BHA & BHT are commonly known as cancer-causing carcinogens that have also been linked to things like insomnia, hair loss, and liver damage.

Sugar

While sugar can't (and shouldn't ) always be avoided, recognizing added sugars in processed foods as harmful is definitely important. Choose natural sugars, such as those in fruit over added sugars in things like drinks and snacks.

Artificial Sweeteners

Artificial sweeteners like Splenda and Sweet 'n Low, market themselves as being better than real sugar but they're actually much worse. They can be extremely hard on our metabolisms and add tons of useless, harmful calories to anything that they're combined with.

MSG

Found in things like canned soup, fast food, and diet sodas, MSG is a "flavor enhancer" that has been known to damage cells to the point of cell death, cause type II diabetes, and contribute greatly to obesity.
