You are what you eat, or so the old adage goes. But should we be taking a closer look at how the foods and liquids we consume are affecting our overall health and well-being? 1. Stick to the perimeter of the store so you can shop the whole grains, vegetables, fruits, and dairy items without getting caught up in the snack and prepared food aisles.

2. Stay away from canned vegetables and instead choose fresh or frozen options. Canned vegetables often contain BPA's and are often filled with added sugar and salt.

3. Stick to lean proteins like chicken, turkey, and fish instead of steak or other red meat.

4. Avoid seafood with high mercury levels such as tuna and swordfish.

5. Read nutrition labels so you can make sure the items you are buying are not filled with unhealthy additives like sugar, chemicals, and sodium.
