Precious Lee just made history as the first black plus size model to appear in Sports Illustrated's Swimsuit Issue. The ad featuring Lee is part of Lane Bryant's #PlusisEqual campaign launched in September.
The message of the ad featuring Lee is simple: "This Body Is Not Made To Be Covered." Her photo leaves no room for argument. Lee tells Elle Magazine, "Us doing this, this happening right now, is going to allow girls that are teenagers now, for it to be normal for them. That is what a real revolution is."
Lee is no stranger to milestones. She was the first black plus size model to appear in Vogue Magazine, which she read when she was young. She tells People Magazine, she could relate to the models featured back then. "I loved all the 90's models. I'm so happy I had that. They weren't plus sized, but they were larger than the average model today."
Lee recently wrote a column for Time Magazine about her journey to becoming a plus sized model, the need to "redefine beauty," and the importance of being confident despite the inevitable haters. She also makes one thing crystal clear, "If you think every woman who is a size 14 is unhappy, you're wrong." Someone should check her purse. They will probably find some hot sauce in her bag, swag.
