Leila Aquino, 20, an exotic entertainer, left her two-year-old daughter Kaleenah Muldrow home alone so she could dance at the gentlemen’s club where she works. She earned $980 in dollar bills the night her baby died… and a trip to jail.
Terrified toddler Kaleenah hid under her bed as the lonely apartment in Brooklyn was consumed by flames (the cause is blamed on a faulty portable heater) on Monday night.
Firefighters didn't know the little girl was there until single mom Leila came home with her shoebox full of singles. “The mother was distraught. She came up, she saw the fire and she said she didn’t know where her baby was,” a neighbor told the New York Post.
After firefighters found the tiny burnt body crouched underneath the bed and told the mom her child was dead, Leila is said to have fallen to the ground in tears.
When questioned by police, Leila stated her regular babysitter was supposed to be watching her daughter, but the woman denied it, stating she had stopped working for Leila earlier this month because she hadn’t been paid and was still owed money.
Leila was charged with reckless endangerment and endangering the welfare of a child.
“She used to take care of her,” Kaleenah’s paternal great-grandmother, Jean Archibald, 73, told the New York Post. “I’ve never heard of Leila doing anything like this. I guess people change.”
It’s a tragedy, all around. Our hearts grieve for this baby girl.
